PENMAIN, or Penmaen, is a hamlet, and in 1845 was formed into an ecclesiastical parish from the civil parish of Mynyddslwyn; it is 3 miles north from
Tredegar Junction station of the Great Western and London and North Western railways and 18 north-west from Newport, in the Southern division of the county,
Wentloog hundred, Bedwellty petty sessional division, Newport union and county court district, rural deanery of Bedwellty, archdeaconry of Monmouth
and diocese of Llandaff. The church of SS. Philip and James, erected in 1855, is a small edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave,
south porch and a western turret with small spire, containing one bell: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1866.
The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £280, without residence, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Llandaff alternately, and held since 1893
by the Rev. David Gower, who is also a surrogate. Here is a Welsh Congregational chapel.
The area is 4,250 acres; the population in 1891 was 4,209.
