OAKDALE LADIES BOWLS CLUB
Oakdale Ladies Bowls Club was founded in 1992 by a small group of ladies. The membership grew to 9 in the inaugural season and we were able to join the South Wales & Mon County League the following year. The membership then swelled to 24.
We were all novices except for Ella Grosvenor, a founder-member. A highly competitive player throughout her adult life, she had played for her county until ill-health prevented her from competing. Later, when her husband, Harold, died, she returned to London to live near her daughter. Sadly Ella has since passed away.
In the early days the men of Oakdale Bowls Club helped us through out paces and showed us the ropes, and we are indebted to them for their patience. Last year we celebrated our 10th. Anniversary .
We've come a long way now, are respected competitors in the sport and where individual members have reached the semi-finals and finals of the South Wales & Mon competitions.
We are particularly proud to include Linzi Mulhall, an Under 25 Welsh International in our numbers. Linzi joined the club when she was just 10 years old, following in the footsteps of her two sets of
grandparents who are all members of the Oakdale Bowls Clubs. Unfortunately, work commitments have meant that Linzi has to put her outdoor bowling career on hold for the present.
Although our club is at Oakdale, very few ladies from the village have joined and we rely on the outlying areas, such as Treowen, Trinant, Pontllanfraith and Blackwood to supply a team. Disappointingly, our membership has dwindled of late, but we are looking forward to the coming season and are always open to ideas for recruiting new members. Newcomers are assured of a warm welcome to the.club and to this competitive, challenging sport.
