Hi, my wife's great grandfather, WILLIAM NEWBERRY, married MARY SMITH in
1878. William was from Stoke St Gregory, Somerset and Mary was from 'Jamaica'. We believe it was
Jamaica, Queens, New York but it could possibly be Jamaica in the West Indies. Mary died in 1891 in
Cardiff giving birth to my wife's grandmother AGNES ALICE TENNANT NEWBERRY. The child was raised by
Joseph and Lucy Tennant in Llantrisant. At some point William Newberry bought a house in Oakdale
Terrace, Penmaen and we would like to know when and if he actually lived in the house. At his death
in 1926 his home address was in Victoria Street, Cwmbran but he still owned the property in Oakdale
Terrace. This was left to his daughter, Agnes Alice Tennant who was married to CHARLES JAMES POOLE.
They moved into Oakdale Terrace in 1927 and had seven children, Agnes, Daisy, Cyril, Charlie,
Clifford, Freddy and Donald. They stayed until the late 1940's when they moved to Slough, Bucks.
Can anyone help us to find out when William Newberry bought the house, did he ever live there and
does he have any living descendants still living locally. We would be grateful for any information.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I am trying to find some family history for a friend of mine.
She is SUSAN MORGAN Her grandfather was from Blackwood. Does any anyone have
any information on a GEORGE MORGAN from Blackwood? Her grandfather moved to
PONTEFRACT, West Yorkshire. Please can you help? If you have any information on
this family please contact me.
I just found a document which lists Pontllanfraith as my grandmother's birthplace.
I am trying to find out about her and her family.
If anyone has heard of MARIE ANNE ( Mary ann ) THOMAS in the area who
was probably born about 1880 to 1886, please email me. She moved to Canada and married Harry Mitchell
in 1904. They settled in Justice, Manitoba. Their childrens' names were: Hazel, Cecil, Walker, Ray and
Les.
I have no other details. I assume she came over with her family, but I don't know for sure. If
anyone knows of this family I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
I am looking for the birth, marriage and burial records of TABOR
CHAPEL (Independent/ Congregational/ United Reform) in Maesycwmmer,
particularly between 1829 and the 1940's, for the family of Edward
RICHARDS (b. ~ 1806) and his wife Jane THOMAS, daughter of Henry
THOMAS. Some children who survived to adulthood are: Henry (b. ~
1830), Daniel (b. ~1837), and Lewis (b. ~1845.) Also looking for family
of Evan DAVIES and his wife Sarah ROWLANDS, same time period. I have
the tombstone inscriptions from Glamorgan Family History Society.
I am researching my REES family who lived in the Fleur-de-Lys (Trelyn) and Maesycwmmer areas. The
father, William REES, was born about 1821 and lists his birthplace as Mynyddyslwyn, Monmouth in the
census. The mother, Hannah REES nee TIPPINGS (also previously married to a Mr. HARRIES) was born about
1826 and lists her birthplace as either Llangynidr, Breconshire or Beaufort in the census.
They had the following children: Thomas (born 1853), John (born abt 1856), Benjamin (born abt 1858),
Mary Ann (born abt 1860, died 1880), Rees (born abt 1862), Richard (born 1864), and Henry (born abt
1867).
Their son, Benjamin, remained in the general area of Maesycwmmer, and their son, Richard, went to
India.
Some of the family are buried at Tabor Chapel in Maesycwmmer.
I am seeking information on two families from the ROCK/BEDWELLTY area. My 3
x grandfather on one side was WILLIAM PUGH STOKES who worked in the iron
works and was a lay Methodist minister. He was born in 1836. His first wife
was SARAH BURRIS(S). Her father was RICHARD BURRISS.
WILLIAM and SARAH had 5 children but it might have been more. One of whom
was my 2 x grandfather RICHARD BURRISS STOKES.
WILLIAM moved to NEWPORT in about 1870 and married MARGARET WILLIAMS. He
became quite famous and his biography was written up in the Methodist
journal of that time, with a line drawing/photograph. I have a very bad
photocopy of this article.
I believe one of his brother's was called GEORGE.
I would welcome any help with my research into this family
Thank you
I am trying to find out more about my family. My Grandfather's name was JOHN JACK EVANS
nickname (HAPPY JACK) and grandmother was LUEREZIA EVANS. My father
DANIEL EVANS was born in 1911 and worked in the
colliery during the twenties and thirties. He said he started there when he was 14 years of age. I have
two football medals he won after working a full shift in the pit. One is a runners up for the Oakdale
Hospital Cup competition 1933/1944 the other is a finalist medal for the Monmouth Challenge cup 1934/
1935. The oponents were I believe Cardiff City. Dad moved to Coventry
during the war to work in the arms factories, a journey he made by push bike, he made this journey many times.
He belonged to a cycle club
in Oakdale of which there was quite a few members. Any information would be well recieved, also if
there is any organization that would like to have the medals as a part of the village history I will
gladly donate them as they belong in your village.

I have just begun to research the maternal side of my family who lived around
Markham and Hollybush. My grandmother was an
ANNIE MARGARET HAMER who married
WILIAM DAVID WEBB in aug 1908. Her parents were
JOHN HAMER and ANNIE THOMAS.
John died with encephalitis before
she was born. Annie Hamer the widow went on to marry a WILLIAM HICKS
and they had a son called HANDEL.
I have been informed that there are still many Hamers living in this area, and were/are
associated with the Markham colliery band. My grandfather WILLIAM DAVID WEBB was a collier,
possibly at the Markham pit and I heard many stories of his expertise in dealing with the
injured at pit accidents.
Any information regarding the above would be much appreciated.
