A set of 50 brand new books was given by Oakdale Christian Centre, Oakdale
Presbyterian Church and Cornerstone Church to Oakdale Library on Friday 16 April.
The presentation marked the opening of the library in its new location in the Square
at the heart of the village. The books
will enlarge the library's selection in Biography, Social Affairs and Religion.
David Jenkins, pastor of the Christian Centre, said at the event that there was
nothing more important than having the opportunity to read the word of God for
oneself. He hoped local people would use these new books either to find out more
about the Christian faith or those who had been
influenced by it, and had themselves been a force for improving their world as a
result.
The presentation is part of a national scheme, Christian Book Promotions, founded in
1968. It recommends a set of mainstream Christian books chosen by a national panel of
literary experts from all the major denominations. Over the past twelve months, 154
placements have been made in libraries across Britain.
Money for the books was donated by the three local churches. Roger Evans, who
organised the scheme, said "The new library will be a tremendous asset for our
village, and this gift from the churches will ensure that people can read about some
amazing adventurous lives, important social ideas and stories of faith which have
shaped our history."
